Woman, Sea-Cat

My 2023 multi-media project “Woman, Sea-Cat*" draws on seascapes and dreamscapes that are inspired by my love for open-water swimming in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas, and my fascination with their cultures - Canaanite coastal mythology and Swedish popular culture, respectively. Swimming in open seas invokes conflicting forces and emotions - freedom and fear, creation and destruction, fertility and demise. To express these conflicts and complexities I chose, as painter, to move between the mediums of painting, sculpture and installation and enact their mutual echoing; to explore the boundaries between the figurative and abstract; to conjure pertinent cultural references - the Canaanite Goddess of war and fertility Anath and the Swedish child-goddess Pippi Long-Stockings. The world I create thus draws on ancient figurines, modernism, surrealism and Camp. The forms of display, moreover, seek to create a sense of shifting balances and angles, of unsettledness and being swept away. * Popular Hebrew name for the Mediterranean stingray. Photo credits: Yoav Nir
